Austin High School

This month we’re featuring not one, but eighteen incredible portraits. It was too hard to choose just one. The portraits were created by students at Austin High School in El Paso, Texas, under the direction of Shane Wiggs, a remarkable art teacher who has been honored for his work in Holocaust Education.
The students created these portraits using a woodcut technique, leading to beautiful and striking details different from the soft and shaded details of the portraits created at our typical workshops. Click here to view larger versions of each portrait so you can see the details of the work.
Back in December, 2018, we featured a portrait created collaboratively by another one of Shane’s classes and it’s worth revisiting on the Portrait of the Month archive page and Austin High School community page. We are thrilled to see the portraits coming out of his classroom and look forward to seeing future work.
