October 2024 Portrait of the Month — Edit Schechter

Edit Schechter

This portrait of Edit Schechter was created by Stacey F., a student at Austin High School in El Paso, Texas. In the workshop, led by the award-winning teacher Shane Wiggs, the students created portraits using a woodcut technique. This resulted in striking details different from the charcoal and pastel portraits created at our typical workshops. This stunning portrait shows a bold and confident subject, alluding to her story: “Edit Schechter helped to save the lives of thousands of Jewish people” (Noah F., Florida Middle School Student). You can read more about her story below.

Students around the world have reflected on their experience drawing Edit’s portrait:

“This is Edit Schechter. She was one of the many people that saved the lives of thousands of Jewish people. She was an Activist, she created fake documents such as birth certificates. She is one of the most courageous and un-selfish people I have ever learned about. She is someone I strive to be.

“It felt good to really connect and get the emotion behind it and make a 2-D figure feel 3 dimensional.”
—Kiana B.
