May 2017 Portrait of the Month - Jakob Frenkiel

Jakob Frenkiel

This sensitive portrait of Holocaust survivor Jakob Frenkiel was created by Samantha W. during a workshop for her Religion and Holocaust class at Manhattan College. The class was a special Sunday session, and the students were fantastic participants. In addition to learning about Memory Project subjects, they prepared for the workshop by interviewing family members about life-changing experiences and brought their black and white photographs to draw.

In sharing the stories of the Holocaust-era subjects and the stories of their families, they linked past to present. They learned about each other's lives and the lives of people they would never meet, cultivating an environment of understanding and empathy.

Thank you to Professor Mehnaz Afridi and the Holocaust, Genocide & Interfaith Education Center at Manhattan College for hosting this moving workshop.
