August 2015 Portrait of the Month - Anna Maria Steinbach

Anna Maria Steinbach

In honor of Roma and Sinti Genocide Remembrance Day, observed on August 2nd, we are featuring a portrait of Anna Maria Steinbach. Anna and her family were Sinti.

Artist Marcelina drew this beautiful portrait of Anna in a workshop at her middle school in Łambinowice, Poland. Another artist in Lantana, Florida, also drew Anna and was very moved by the experience.

She wrote:

“Anna Maria and her family were [Sinti] so they were stripped of German citizenship and treated badly and were labeled as gypsies in the concentration camps. Anna Maria and her family were gassed to death in 1944. I think I might remember the people that we drew, they all have different stories and it is so shocking that these things happened to them."
