Anna Maria Steinbach

In honor of Roma and Sinti Genocide Remembrance Day, observed on August 2nd, we are featuring a portrait of Anna Maria Steinbach. Anna and her family were Sinti.

Artist Marcelina drew this beautiful portrait of Anna in a workshop at her middle school in Łambinowice, Poland. Another artist in Lantana, Florida, also drew Anna and was very moved by the experience. She wrote:

“Anna Maria and her family were [Sinti] so they were stripped of German citizenship and treated badly and were labeled as gypsies in the concentration camps. Anna Maria and her family were gassed to death in 1944.”

“I think I might remember the people that we drew, they all have different stories and it is so shocking that these things happened to them.”
